The Grape - There have been reports that Chardonnay was being planted in California in the late 1800's and had gained major popularity before Prohibition. During Prohibition the grape was almost completely uprooted with only a few vineyards leaving some vines, but after the 1950's Californian growers began planting more of the easy-adaptable variety. The variety gained the highest popularity after the 1976 "Judgement of Paris" where, in a blind tasting conducted by French judges, victory went to a California Chardonnay over a Burgundy Chardonnay. Today, this varietal accounts for nearly 25% of the world's total Chardonnay plantings.
